Shakespeare’s classic pastoral comedy centers the story of Rosalind and her cousin who escape into the forest to find love. Created for Director Scott Cox of the JCCC Theater Department, this poster was designed to transport the viewer into the Forest of Arden where love abounds and the human condition is pondered.
During a presentation from the director where he expressed his hope for a poster that captured the whimsy of the Forest of Arden, I started sketching. I finally landed on the idea of centering the forest itself because it is the shelter of the forest that allows Shakespeare's characters to explore love, loss, and the human condition. Once I completed a rough sketch I couldn't help but dive into carving a linoleum block to give the illustration some organic texture. After cleaning up the print in Photoshop I worked it into my final design!
